Linville Falls and 1100 surrounding acres were purchased for the Blue Ridge Parkway in 1951 by John D. Rockefeller at a price of $100,000. This recreation area, located near milemarker 316, now includes a picnic area, campground, visitors center and hiking trails that lead to dramatic overlooks of the falls and gorge.

Mabry Mill 8x10 Print by J. Scott Graham

Mabry Mill was built by Ed Mabry in the early 20th century so he could grind cornmeal, saw logs into boards, and power a woodworking shop. After Mabry’s death in 1936, the mill fell into disrepair until it was restored in 1942 under the direction of Parkway designer Stan Abbott. In the years since, Mabry Mill has become a beloved landmark along the Blue Ridge Parkway near milemarker 176.

The bluish haze suspended in these mountains is produced by emissions of hydrocarbons and water vapor from forest vegetation, giving the appearance of ranges that fade into the distance.
