Beyond the Winding Road
Its official logo suggests that the Blue Ridge Parkway is a gently winding, treelined road through scenic mountains. It is that and more. Created in the Depression days of the 1930's, the Blue Ridge Parkway was the nation's first rural parkway. Standards for road design and engineering were pioneered here. It is also the nation's longest parkway, stretching 469 miles to connect the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina
Besides its many panoramic vistas, the Parkway preserves diverse natural resources and remnants of Appalachian regional culture. Not least of all, it provides abundant opportunities for hiking, camping, and other recreational activities. In short, the Parkway is both a place to visit and to see, a place to explore and discover.
