As you look at the world around us, you may not realize it, but much of how it unfolds before you is a direct result of the railroad. From the locations of cities and towns, to the development of the local cultures, railroads helped shape it all.
Over 50% of all railroad tracks in America have been abandoned and torn up. For every mile of track scraped, another mile of our link to the past is gone. A precious few are saved and turned into scenic railroads. Railroads that link us to our past, and take us into an environment of a slower paced beauty in a time almost forgotten. In this program we will introduce you to a few of these railroads.
Climb aboard for an unforgettable journey to seven of the most scenic and historic tourist railroads in the western United States. We will travel from the base of the 14,000 foot Mt. Rainier in Washington State, to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Along the way, this program will reveal the stunning beauty and interesting stories behind these railways.
This PBS program was produced and filmed by Emmy Award-winner Robert C. Van Camp, written by Emmy Award-winner Rick Amme and hosted by Grammy Award-winning musician and storyteller David Holt.
